Ruiying (Rain) Liu

I am Ruiying (Rain) Liu, pursuing a master’s degree in User Experience Design at the University of Toronto. With over five years in UX/UI design, my focus extends beyond traditional interfaces to innovative technologies like facial recognition. My approach aims to blend user-centered design principles with ethical considerations in technology deployment, ensuring both intuitive usability and privacy protection. This commitment to responsible design and digital accessibility drives my professional and academic pursuits.

Cordelia Shan

Cordelia Shan is a full-time data and information systems analyst at the University of Toronto and a graduate student in the Master of Information program, specializing in Human-Centred Data Science (HCDS). She is interested in the study of information systems, writing, and information visualization, and is currently exploring how storytelling and visual representation can be used to make data more engaging and meaningful.

Chi-Ching (Sonia) Juan

Sonia is a UX designer and Master of Information student at the University of Toronto. With a background in industrial design and over three years of experience in both agency and in-house roles, she focuses on inclusive, research-driven solutions. Her recent work explores voice user interfaces and accessibility in everyday technology.

Ziqi (Zoey) Guan

Hello! I am a first-year Master of Information student at the University of Toronto, specializing in Human-Centred Data Science. As a member of the ORBIT Lab led by Dr. Tao Wang, I explore the origins of database innovations, combining technical analysis with engaging narratives. My research focuses on the evolution of data technologies, machine learning and NLP applications in financial risk assessment.

I hold a B.A. in Applied Economics and Psychology from Queen’s University, where I studied econometric modeling and human behavior. When not querying databases, I enjoy debugging the occasional syntax error in my coffee orders.

Celine Huang

Celine is a Master of Information Student at University of Toronto's Faculty of Information where she studies Library and Information Sciences and Human-Centered Data Science. She has a BA in East Asian Studies and Art History from the University of Toronto with a focus in Chinese art, history, and culture. She works at the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library as a student library assistant and as a graduate translation research assistant at the university. She is interested in the humanities and technology with an emphasis on developing innovative solutions to complex challenges. She is open to opportunities in both sectors.

Alex Liao

Alex is a Master of Information student in the concentration of UX/UI Design. Having studied Architecture in undergrad with specialization in technology, he approaches design with a passion of creating technology-driven digital experiences that emphasize the user’s story. He has a background in multidisciplinary settings working for international corporate organizations as well as government public diplomacy that influences his approach to implementation of technological tools in design ideology. Motivated by his experience of interacting with community design, Alex is always eager in exploring and learning about emerging technologies, aiming to utilize it’s potential to transform lives,  connecting communities and individuals to a future of endless possibilities for all.

Hon Wa Ng

Hi! I am a Master of Information student at the University of Toronto, specializing in Information Systems and Design. I holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and has pursued additional coursework in machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity across multiple departments. 

In Winter 2025, I served as a Teaching Assistant for Computer Security at the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. For now (Summer 2025), I am a technical tutor in Learning Hub, iSchool and a research assistant. My research focuses on developing and evaluating graph-based classification pipelines through systematic error analysis and novel preprocessing strategies.

I also brings several years of professional experience in technology consultingand cybersecurity, having worked at global firms such as Accenture, KPMG, and Protiviti on projects involving security assessments, vulnerability scanning, and GRC practices. I am currently completing a co-op as an Information Governance Analyst at the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Outside of academics, I enjoy discovering great restaurants, biking around Toronto, exploring new coffee shops, and solo travelling.

Tao Wang

Dr. Tao Wang is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream)  at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto. He also serves as the Concentration Coordinator for the Information Systems and Design concentration in the Master of Information program.

Dr. Wang’s teaching interests include statistics, data analytics, and knowledge management. His research focuses on online communication, knowledge management, and behavioral analytics, primarily employing quantitative methods such as natural language processing (NLP) and other machine learning algorithms. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Wang gained professional experience in several international advertising agencies and ran his own business as an entrepreneur for eight years.

Michelle Zhuang

Michelle is currently a Grade 12 student and a soon-to-be University of Toronto student! She has kindly volunteered to help build the website for ORBIT Lab.
